Description
A vintage movie poster of ''The Amorous Adventures of Moll Flanders'', a 1965 British historical romantic comedy film directed by Terence Young. The film is based on the 1722 novel "Moll Flanders" by Daniel Defoe and offers a lighthearted and romantic interpretation of the classic story.
Cast:
Kim Novak as Moll Flanders: The film's titular character, a spirited and resourceful woman who navigates life's challenges.
Richard Johnson as Jemmy Seagrave: A highwayman and Moll's love interest.
Angela Lansbury as Lady Blystone: An eccentric noblewoman who plays a significant role in Moll's adventures.
George Sanders as The Banker: A wealthy and opportunistic man who becomes involved with Moll.
Vittorio De Sica as The Lord: A nobleman who also becomes entangled with Moll.
Bernard Cribbins as Ned: Moll's loyal friend and confidant.
Leo McKern as Squint: Another highwayman who crosses paths with Moll.
Plot:
"The Amorous Adventures of Moll Flanders" tells the story of Moll Flanders, a spirited young woman born into poverty in 18th-century England. After a series of misadventures and challenges, Moll rises through society's ranks, experiencing love, loss, and scandal along the way. Her journey takes her from a life of crime to a position of wealth and social status, with a colorful array of lovers and suitors, including highwaymen and noblemen.
As Moll navigates the complexities of her romantic and social life, she faces moral dilemmas and seeks to find her true path in a world filled with both temptation and danger.
Style and Themes:
The film combines elements of comedy, romance, and adventure in a period setting. It offers a more lighthearted and romantic interpretation of Moll Flanders' story compared to the novel's darker themes.
Legacy:
"The Amorous Adventures of Moll Flanders" is notable for its spirited performance by Kim Novak in the title role and its whimsical take on a classic literary character. While not as well-known as some other adaptations of the Moll Flanders story, the film remains a charming and entertaining period piece that captures the essence of romance and adventure in 18th-century England.
About the artist:
Raymond Elseviers (aka “Ray”) was a Belgian artist who was born in 1914 and died in 1999. Between early 1960's and early 1980's he painted over 225 movie posters.
The brush strokes of Ray’s posters are inspired by the oil painting tradition, and they create sketchy touches of color, like in an Impressionist painting. Ray outlines the figures of the films' protagonists in the foreground, while landscapes and background scenes are achieved through imprecise dashes of color, in some cases even creating abstract compositions.
Even the color palette used by Ray is extremely identifiable: different shades of pink and purple, yellows, reds, and greens characterize his artworks. Looking at Ray's posters is a bit like watching a movie when technicolor was invented: an explosion of color after years of black and white.
